Charles Evans

Charles Evans is the British mountaineer who, in 1953, together with Tom Bourdillon, reached the South Summit ofEverest, the highest point reached by John Hunt’s British expedition before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit. In 1955, he led the British expedition that made the first ascent of Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak. A surgeon by training, he was principal of the University College of North Wales (later Bangor University) from 1958, and president of the Alpine Club from 1967 to 1970.

Ottorino Mezzalama

Born in Bologna in 1888, Ottorino Mezzalama is regarded as the father of Italian ski mountaineering: thanks to him, the exploration of slopes and valleys also gained recognition, without this necessarily having to be geared towards the conquest of a summit.

Guido Rey

As the dates of his life on earth bear witness, he was a man “from another era”, even in his relationship with the mountains. Born into a distinguished and wealthy family (he was the nephew of Quintino Sella), his grandfather was his first mentor in mountaineering: it was he who, at the age of thirteen, introduced him to the Matterhorn from avantage point in the Biella Alps.
